The California Department of Education, Special Education Division is pleased to announce the following in-person training in preparation for the upcoming collection of data for students with disabilities int he California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS): CALPADS Special Education Data 2025-26. This session will train local special education data coordinations and Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)-level staff on the updates and changes for the CALPADS Fall 1 Submission as well as other special education-related data. The training will cover:
  • Fall 1 CALPADS Data Submission and Reports
  • What's new for Fall 1
  • State Performance Plan (SPP)/Annual Performance Report Indicators using Fall 1 data
  • Data for Annual Determination Letter (ADL)
  • Monitoring Reports and Holding Timely Meetings

This growing diversity has important implications for determining the most appropriate language assessments for individual African American students. This presentation will address key considerations for determining the most appropriate language assessments for individual African American students from diverse linguistic backgrounds including those who speak General/Mainstream American English, African American English, other creole-based English languages, as well as languages other than English.

Literacy is important for all individuals. Literacy skills are crucial for overall academic success, independent living, social participation, and employment opportunities. Individuals with intellectual disabilities have unique strengths, potential, and challenges. Due to challenges with cognitive processing, memory, attention, and language development, acquiring literacy skills is often more difficult. However, with appropriate support, accommodations, and evidence-based instructional methods, manu individuals with intellectual disabilities can develop functional literacy skills. Developing functional literacy can enhance self-esteem and quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities. 
 
Participants will be able to:
  • Define the qualities of literacy instruction.
  • Identify evidence-based strategies and interventions and multisensory teaching approaches.
  • Evaluate assistive technology tools to support reading, writing and language.

Selective Mutism is described as social communication anxiety. It not only affects verbal communication, but also nonverbal communication skills. This training will discuss assessment and treatment of students with Selective Mutism utilizing a team approach. 
 
Participants will be able to:
  • Understand a multifaceted assessment approach.
  • Identify members of a transdisciplinary team.
  • List and understand the four staes of Selective Mutism.
  • Identify evidence-based treatment approaches.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Implementation: A student-centered training focused on brekaing down barriers and building a collaborative approach to improving communication.
 
Participants will be able to:
  • Identify two team barriers to effective AAC implementation
  • Create solutions to address their team's specific implementation barriers
  • Develop a comprehensive AAC implementaiton plan including what the student is working on (i.e., the goal), when they have opportunities to work on it (i.e., activity/time of day), where it is occurring (i.e., environment), who is supporting it (i.e., skilled communication partners), and how it should be used (e.g., levels of support needed, response of communication partner)
